There Goes the Haunt

By Joy Apus

Her hair was long and dark. She wore white. She floated in the air. She wave at her and said, ‘hi.’

Here in this campus alone many tales are spread. There are more than 20 dormitories and halls and innumerable number of cottages in the campus where different creepy tales are said to be happening. One of the oldest halls of residence in MSU is the Hannifa Dormitory. It is a two storey boarding house with sixteen rooms, seven rooms on the first floor and nine on the second. The main door is facing the isles leading to comfort room. Once the visitors open the main door they are entertain by that door.s The positions of the room are facing each other like in the school dormitories. On the left side is a staircase going to the second floor which is similar in design with that of in the first floor.
According to the old occupants, the establishment was built during 1960’s. Just the thought of how old it is makes an eerie atmosphere. Forty years make a lot. Supernatural phenomena are expected to take place. Occupants, both new and old, have their own versions to tell.
One version said that the first tenants of the dormitory were soldiers and they occupied the cottage for about two years. If we are going to discuss it chronologically, the time is not enough.
I interviewed some students. Jovelyn Cabanig, a Management student shared something about the ghost who stayed at the dormitory. For her, these creatures very seldom harm people. They appear to mortals, usually to those with active sixth sense, to give information or to relay a very important message.
One day, a ghost appeared before a roommate of hers with an active third eye. The spirit said that she did not intend to do harm. She only wanted to tell the lodgers that the third-dimension people do not like the hall to be dirty and that it must always be kept clean at all times.
According to Cecile Baculot, an AB History student, while wide awake studying her Biology subject, she heard somebody singing upstairs. It was around one o’clock in the morning. After three nights, she heard her again. The next morning, she asked her hallmates about the voice she kept hearing. Odd that none of the other occupants heard of it when it was loud enough for everybody from the second floor to hear it! She got goose bumps as soon as she learned that. A week after, Filipino Major Guia Mae Pairat heard the same voice singing so instead of studying her lesson late at night, she went back to sleep and hid herself in blanket.
IT student Cherry Jane Rivasand said that an old occupant shared to her an incident that happened in room 7 two years ago. According to her story, there were two siblings who occupied the room. When the youngest was sleeping, the eldest went out. At the middle of her sleep, she heard someone calling out her name. She glanced at the other side of the bed, thinking that it was her sister but found nothing. She then looked into the foot of the other bed and saw someone standing in between the locker and the deck. The woman wore white dress whose feet did not land on the ground and had very a long black hair. Accordingly, the lady in white smiled at her and waved hi. She froze in shock and collapsed for couple of minutes. When she became conscious again, she shouted and ran outside the room. The next day, the siblings decided to move out.
There are still lots of incredible stories about ghosts here in MSU—in the different colleges and old offices. We may not notice but we bump into them everyday. When these third-dimension creatures decide to appear before you, are you ready? What would be reaction? Are you brave enough to look at them? Will you ask them something or remain frozen?

Voguish Versus Unfashionable

By Hanna Sarip

When you walk along the annex building paths—Annex buildings by the way are where most of the students attend their liberal arts subjects—you will meet students from different walks of life. You suddenly bump along boys and girls wearing jogging pants, putting on Spartan flips and carrying their notebooks at hand. The term ‘yagit’ is often used to dubbed these people. Sometimes, I am flabbergasted by the thought of them being able to survive the scrutinizing eyes of some professors who do not allow informal attires in class. In MSU-IIT, students are not allowed to wear sandals. They are required to put on closed shoes which is hardly pursued by students from MSU Main Campus.

But fortunately, most instructors do not put more emphasis the attire of their students. In some cases, they do not mind at all for as long as one can comply with his requirements and get good grades.

But apart from the so-called ‘Yagit’ students, we have the opposite class, the ‘elegante’. They are those fashion-forward, up-to-date, trendy, fashionable ones. They are often stereotyped as rich and ‘maarte’ or vain. These are the students you find who are very particular in dressing. These are the people who can’t go to school without make-ups, colorful veils matching their outfits, trendy bags and dresses and even an expensive pair of slippers, sandals, shoes and peeptoes. For simple people, they could be considered as sosy. They always look like they can go to a party anytime. We often laugh at these people especially the girls included in this class. We laugh at the way they dress, their manner of speech, their way they style their hair, etc. Usually, these people suffer from the bad first impression. Why do people have this supposition that when you are maarte they think of matapobre, feeling, _______.

And why do some people have this conception that because you dress informally—or to make it euphonious—SO SIMPLY, they think you mean less to the class. They are often neglected and not given much attention.

Even though they are like that we can never tell that they can’t compete in terms of academics because it could only be their personality. That’s one thing we can’t get away from them. In my own view, there are really people like this strolling around the campus, but people also mistake some ‘social climbers’ to be part of this class.

Intelligence can never be based on what a person wears. As long as you are comfortable with it then you can wear it. Mindanao State University has been known for their students who can afford to go to school wearing anything they want.Indeed, Mindanao State University is a very unique University. We, the MSUans, are very fortunate because we are not reprimanded by our teachers because of the clothes we wear. We come and go wearing anything we want. We are not afraid to be criticized by people. You may be wearing Spartans, jogging pants or expensive clothes, one thing is for sure ~ ONCE AN MSUAN, ALWAYS AN MSUAN!

What’s in? What’s Out?

By Sahara Sunggod

Students from MSU campus are always updated to what’s new in terms of fashion, music, and to everything new to the ears and to the eyes.

So what’s in and what’s out on:

FASHION. So what’s in and what’s out in fashion today in terms of fashion? Last semester the so-called EMO look became a surefire hit to most of the students here in the campus. Wherever you go, from left to right all you’ll see are these creeping-like-vineyards EMO people. But now, like any other style, it’s starting to lose its prominence. This is because of the coming back of 80’s fashion. At the start of a new fashion decade, women's clothing emphasized three major themes in 1980: knits, school classics, and bicolor styles. Designers revamped the sweater girl, revitalized 'preppie' uniforms (tweedy blazers, sweaters, and skirts), and even the using of colorful ribbon designed head band. This became very popular now to the fashionista ladies here in the campus. And guys will never let themselves be out of trend. I guess it’s a “byebye” to the EMO look and red-carpet welcome to the 80’s trend!

HIJAB.Considering that this is an Islamic province, new styles of head coverings shall always be updated! It is a must! Wearing the hijab (veil) is probably the most basic and the most important garment of Muslim women. When we were in our high school years, we wear this plain triangle type of veil at our regular class and the rectangular type for uniform-free day. As we step in college, it eventually changed. From colorful stripes, t-shirts and ruffles, Pakistani dress became a hit. The wearing of thin silky colorfully printed hijabs is the IN-STYLE! Especially those huge ones almost qualified enough to be a mini blanket! Seriously! People buy these in the RTW stores located in Padian. These hijabs are exported from different Asian countries namely Thailand, Pakistan, India, Malaysia and many others. Before you will only see it worn during special events like weddings, engagements, kandori, etc. nowadays, people use it like commercial hijabs.

FOOD. All of us have our own favorite fast foods and snack-ins. Who among MSUans would ever hate food? I have made a survey on what’s in and what’s out to MSUans when it comes to cuisine. I discovered that the Cafeteria near the College of Information Technology. It used to be the most popular self-service restaurant in the campus. But as the rapid expansion of fast foods in Commercial Center, the cafeteria became less and less popular to the students.

My survey had shown that the most popular and most frequently visited fast food now is PASTEL TATS, located near the Dimaporo Gymnasium. Students, teachers, couples and even people from outside MSU prefer Pastel to serve them.

Talking about the most popular snack-in, of course majority (almost all actually) have a strong preference for Village Bakeshop located at the Commercial Center. But before Village Bakeshop won most of the students’ choice for the best snack-in, it was Exan that used to be on the seat.

Today new restaurants, fast foods and snack-ins continue to spread out like mushrooms in the campus. Among them, the following are the potential establishments: Mister Donut and Cantinita located at main road going to Com. Cent.

MIND GAMES. Have you heard the search for Rubik’s Cube Wizard? Actually playing Rubik’s Cube is not new it was invented during World War II by a mathematician named Erno Rubik, it just became popular again to the students here in MSU. It is a trademark for a puzzle that is a cube composed of smaller rotating colored cubes, the aim being to rotate them to make each of the large cube's faces a uniform color. It is now widely known and popular game in the campus, from elementary to college of both sexes. Because of this, MSU students might probably become popular as the Rubik’s Cube Wizards all over the country.
